Via Refinery29 – Cheese is as addictive as morphine

Here’s a great little article explaining how your body reacts to cheese and the breakdown of casein and it’s merry band of amino acids:

Cheese might as well be called “dairy crack,”…Your brain essentially reacts to it in the same manner it would to any addictive substance thanks to a protein found in dairy called casein.

Cheese might as well be called “dairy crack,” says Dr. Neal Barnard, founder and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Your brain essentially reacts to it in the same manner it would to any addictive substance thanks to a protein found in dairy called casein.

Casein, like all proteins, is basically a bead-like string of amino acids. But when your body digests it, “the beads don’t entirely separate. Some of them stay attached in strings of four, five, or seven amino acids,” explains Dr. Barnard. These shorter strings are the “casein-derived, morphine-like compounds” called casomorphins, and can attach to the opiate receptors in your brain.

So I guess some of us don’t have to feel so bad about needing a shower after eating cheese.

We don’t yet sell cheese, but you might like to give our casein a try.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 24TH

Ok, so it seems this info is more hyperbole than science, so we have no real excuse for the cheese addiction, outside the weakness for cheese. Dammit.

Cheese is not ‘as addictive as drugs’, no matter what ‘experts’ tell you (James Tennent) – IBT

According to Frankie Phillips, registered dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, the idea that cheese is addictive is “sort of, maybe, kind of, in the realms of possibility in a model… but there’s no evidence that that would happen in people so that kind of breaks down the argument”.

“We eat cheese after a really nice meal, we go on picnics and have cheese sandwiches, it’s the links that we make with the emotional side of eating that can make us think ‘oh I’m addicted to it’ when simply it means I enjoy eating it.”
