Achieving optimum health for bodybuilders

I’ve been a natural bodybuilder for over 35 years and I’ve tried so many different types of sports supplements during that time.

My preferred choice of all sports supplements on the market is Protein Supplies Australia (PSA), simply because they are pure, high quality products with no added rubbish. I pretty much use most of their range according to my needs. Since switching to PSA products several years ago, my health and progress has gone to another level, and I highly suggest that you try them and see and feel the results for yourself. People often ask me which sports supplements I use, particularly protein powder. I always suggest a good quality one in the form of PSA. Being an Ectomorph/hardgainer body type, I prefer to use good quality WPI/WPC blends during the day, a WPI straight after training and a slow releasing one (Micellar Casein) before bed.

When trying to increase energy levels, build lean muscle mass and/or strip body fat, it all comes down to putting the right fuel into your body to get your desired results. That fuel must first and foremost come in the form of Macro nutrients which is balanced with Micro nutrients. In my opinion the best complex carbohydrates are sweet potato, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, rolled oats, quinoa and the best fibrous carbs are steamed veggies and fruit. Your protein needs should come in the form of chicken, turkey, eggs, fish, lean grass fed mince, legumes, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey protein. It’s imperative to include good fats like, cold pressed organic coconut and olive oil, organic peanut butter, avocado, salmon oil, flaxseed oil, cod liver oil and almonds. These are the foundation foods that fuel your workouts to build lean muscle and burn body fat, we then supplement these foods with an array of sports supplements. It’s crucial to keep the body well balanced and alkaline and keep our gut flora healthy in order to digest food effectively and absorb the nutrients more efficiently. Remember, optimum health begins within and reflects outwards.

Achieving optimum health is not rocket science, it’s merely a matter of eating the right foods, using the right supplements and applying regular exercise.

Achieving optimum health is not rocket science, it’s merely a matter of eating the right foods, using the right supplements and applying regular exercise.  In my 37 years of training, I’ve learnt that doing weight training and no cardiovascular training, or vice versa is not balance. I feel better today at 58 than I did at 28, because I do what it takes to achieve optimum health. You can get better as you age, by applying the things that are beneficial to your health and avoid the things that our detrimental to your health.
